Visit Arizona State Museum's newest permanent exhibit: 20,000 pots spanning 2,000 years
By Margaret Regan
Tucson's Arizona State Museum has one of the most extraordinary collections of pottery from the Southwest US and northwest Mexico. Among its 20,000 sterling specimens are gorgeous ceramics from nearly every native culture in the region, made from natural materials gleaned from the earth. The museum has launched a glittering permanent exhibition of the best of the pots, right next door to a brand-new, state-of-the-art lab and the Agnese and Emil Haury/Southwest Native Nations Pottery storage vault, with viewing windows front and center. "We'll bring the visitor inside the pottery vault by bringing them behind the scenes," explains Davison Koenig, a designer of the new exhibition space, including the Arnold and Doris Roland Wall of Pots. | ![]() |
